HAWAIIAN CRAB CREATIONS Crab shells are found on the rocks of Hawaii’s shores. The Crabs discard them to grow new ones. Crabs (and other crustaceans) cannot grow in a linear fashion like most animals. Because they have a hard outer shell (the exoskeleton) that does not grow, they must shed their shells, a process called molting. Just as we outgrow our clothing, crabs outgrow their shells.

These Crabs are a favorite menu item at Hawaiian Luaus. Legend has it, the A’ama Crab was offered in sacrifices so that the Gods would loosen
(a’ama) and grant a particular wish.
